Smuggler’s Notch
During the Embargo Act of 1807, which forbade American trade with Great Britain and Canada, Smuggler’s Notch became the host for illegal trade as carrying goods and herding livestock continued through the Notch. Fugitive slaves used the Notch as an escape route.
